Did you know that there are very few early childhood songs out there specifically written about the desert?  This week at The Center the kids are learning about the Desert and all of the animals and plants that thrive there.  In an effort to make what I have found in an internet search a little more bulky, I have added some verses to an already commonly found “desert” song.

Going To The Desert
(Sung to: “She’ll Be Comin Around The Mountain)
We are going on a journey to the desert
We are going on a journey to the desert
We are going on a journey, We are going on a journey
We are going on a journey to the desert

Oh we’ll see a roadrunner, watch it go, “whoosh, whoosh”!
Oh we’ll see a roadrunner, watch it go, “whoosh, whoosh”!
Oh we’ll see a roadrunner, oh we’ll see a roadrunner
Oh we’ll see a roadrunner, watch it go, “whoosh, whoosh”!

Oh we won’t see snow or ice while we’re there, “Brrrr, Brrrr”
Oh we won’t see snow or ice while we’re there, “Brrrr, Brrrr”
Oh we won’t see snow or ice, Oh we won’t see snow or ice
Oh we won’t see snow or ice while we’re there, “Brrrr, Brrrr”

Oh the sun will be shining, yes it will, “It’s Hot”
Oh the sun will be shining, yes it will, “It’s Hot”
Oh the sun will be shining, Oh the sun will be shining
Oh the sun will be shining, yes it will, “It’s Hot”

Oh we’ll see a saguaro cactus when we’re there, “ouch, ouch!”
Oh we’ll see a saguaro cactus where we’re there, “ouch, ouch!”
Oh we’ll see a saguaro cactus, oh we’ll see a saguaro cactus
Oh we’ll see a saguaro cactus where we’re there, “ouch, ouch!”

Oh we’ll see a big coyote when we’re there, “HOWL”
Oh We’ll see a big coyote when we’re there, “HOWL”
OH we’ll see a big coyote, we’ll see a big coyote
We’ll see a big coyote when we’re there, “HOWL”

Oh we’ll see a little jackrabbit over there, “hop, hop”
Oh we’ll see a little jackrabbit over there, “hop, hop”
Oh we’ll see a little jackrabbit, we’ll see a little jackrabbit
We’ll see a little jackrabbit when we’re there “Hop, Hop”

Oh, we’ll run into a gila monster when we’re there “Nice and Slow”
Oh, we’ll run into a gila monster when we’re there “Nice and Slow”
Oh we’ll run into a Gila, we will run into a Gila,
Oh, we’ll run into a gila monster when we’re there “Nice and Slow”

I found this song over at Everything Preschool.  I added the last three verses in hopes that it will entice the kids to sing along (it takes a few verses to get the words sometimes). Each verse will have a lovely movement to go with it and I usually ask the kids for some ideas and then go from there.  That’s what preschool is all about, learning by doing!

What desert wildlife have I forgotten?  Tell me about some verses that you would like to add!
