It may be mid-April, but the weather is already starting to turn, and we are in active planning mode for Summer 2013 activities! This summer we have been given the unique opportunity to provide a music experience at a summer camp for children with Autism. Camp Takoda, a camp developed and run by The Autism Society of McLean County, allows children on the Autism Spectrum to experience a typical summer camp within a safe community and with a low camper to counselor ratio.
The goal of Camp Takoda is “to always provide a comfortable and motivating environment that will help each camper develop their individual abilities with an emphasis on building self-confidence, social skills, and independence… All in a fun setting!”
When I read this, I automatically think, “Hey, Music Therapy is the perfect addition to help promote that goal!”
This summer, we will be using music to promote self-confidence, social skills and independence among the children attending this camp AND the counselors who are sharing in their experiences along the way. Children and staff will participate in a variety of music-making experiences including song-writing, structured instrument play, singing and more!
This is when we come to YOU, our awesome supporters! We want to be able to provide this music opportunity at no cost to the camp organizers, as they have already donated so much of their OWN time and money to make this a success! We would like to raise enough money to offset the cost of our staff, supplies and travel and provide an amazing experience for the participants while at camp!
Our Mission: Raise $1000 in order to offset the cost of staff, supplies and travel by May 31, 2013. In addition, any monies not used for program implementation will be used to help send more kids to camp!
