At the beginning of the month, we held our first ever Ukuladies’ Night! After holding ukulele summer camps for kids, I had several adults ask, “Do you ever teach adults??” YES! Music lessons are great for brain development and neural connections at any age! But knowing the demands of work and life, I suspected it may be difficult for adults to commit to weekly lessons and thus, Ukuladies’ Night was born! These gender-inclusive events for adults of any ukulele ability level are a way to learn something new while jamming and having fun with friends, new and old.

Participants of the inaugural event were asked about their motivation to sign up and their music and ukulele experience prior to Ukuladies’ Night.

What motivated you to sign up for Ukuladies’ Night?

Sounded like a fun time and when I shared (on Facebook) my friends wanted to come with! A night out with girl friends challenging myself and learning a new skill sounded like a good idea.

The pure fact that it was called Ukuladies’ Night!!! It sounded like a fun opportunity for community!!

Saw post on Facebook. Confirmed a friend was attending. Wanted to have fun plans with catchy name.

What was the best part?

The laughter and excitement for each other as we figured things out. How everyone was supportive and encouraging. Amy was a patient and great teacher and her excitement was contagious! The cheesecake strawberries were pretty yummy as well!

Laughing and being silly!

Good company, laughing, and basic skills getting taught at a healthy pace with resources to allow growth from practice outside of the lesson.

How much music experience did you have prior to Ukuladies’ Night?

Very little. Played a year of band in HS.

I played the flute in junior high.

A couple songs my grandma taught me on piano and a basic drum beat my brother taught me.

How much ukulele experience did you have prior to Ukuladies’ Night?

My daughter plays ukulele. So I knew about it, how she plays, things like chords but had never played before.

Zero!!

Zero.

Awww, thanks, Ukuladies!! The enthusiasm was 100% genuine. And I will definitely make those cheesecake stuffed strawberries again if that’s the part that piqued your interest. 😉

I’m super excited to announce that the next Ukuladies’ Night is being planned as we speak! Our October edition will be Ukuladies’ Night: Spooks and Ukes! It will still cover the ukulele basics while featuring some favorite tunes from spooky season!
